Hampstead Garden Suburb Cottage
London’s Hampstead Garden Suburb is located north of Hampstead, west of Highgate and east of Golders Green It is a planned development dating from the first decades of the 20th Century, although its northernmost expansion dates from the 1930s. In the older part the architecture follows the style of the Arts and Crafts movement and many of the houses are modelled on cottages, like the one shown here. I have found the design of this particular cottage to be especially attractive with its side entrance and its miniature stair towers on the front of the building (it’s actually two houses).
The photographs show the cottage shot just before sunset in autumn showing autumn colours and in siring showing spring blossom
This photograph was shot in early November 2018 and I was attracted to it by the light shortly before sunset and by the deep red colour of the tree in front of the house. There are golden tones on the building itself, but the clouds have not yet turned red. This was shot with no filters.
This photograph is of the same subject in April 2019 in similar lighting conditions. The major difference is that the tree is now in blossom and the shot is framed slightly differently to reduce the intrusion of the foliage on the right. The sky was brighter, and I had to use a graduated neutral density filter to darken it.
